Magical Thinking

A very quick post before bed tonight. Tonight I saw a preview performance of The Year of Magical Thinking  - an adaptation of Joan Didion's book with Robyn Nevin performing the hour and a half long monologue. This is a raw, intensely felt and unashamedly literate play that feels so intimate that I really resented people coughing quietly. Robyn Nevin is seamless as Didion and the staging is simple and effective. Both Ant. and I were unsure about the sometimes obtrusive sound-scape but that is a very minor matter. The magic is in a very painful story told with humility, enormous self-awareness, wit and a beautiful sense of words. The performance is always under tight control and this is somehow the most heart-breaking thing about it.
I am aware that I sound like a blurb.
And we saw Cate Blanchett (the director) in the flesh, incognito and at close proximity. SK II appears to work if you're in the market for a moisturiser.
